Model Town Case: Jawad Hamid records important statement in anti-terrorism court

Jawad Hamid records important statement in anti-terrorism court

In connection with the private complaint in Model Town case being heard by an anti-terrorism court, complainant Jawad Hamid recorded an important statement in the courtroom yesterday. He said Rana Sanaullah admitted before an inquiry tribunal that a sub-committee had been formed in connection with the planned arrival of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri, which was meeting on a daily basis. He said the then IG Khan Baig refused to order a violent operation as part of coercive measures to stop the arrival of Dr Qadri. Consequently, Khan Baig was made an OSD overnight on June 14 and was not posted on the active post till his retirement from service.

Jawad Hamid said in his statement that Mushtaq Sukhera, an officer of BS-21, was appointed to the post of IGP, which is an otherwise grade 22 position, on the same day of June 14, 2014. Upon his retirement, he was inducted into the post of Federal Tax Ombudsman as a reward. He further said DCO Lahore Qazi Ahmad Javed was also changed following his refusal to participate in the massacre. He was replaced by Captain (r ) Usman Ahmad as DCO Lahore who took an active part in the Model Town operation. He said the reason for the overnight change of the IGP and the DCO Lahore was the planning for the massacre on June 17, 2014. The special branch dispatched reports to Rana Sanaullah, Chief Secretary Naveed Akram Cheema, Home Secretary Major (r) Azam Suleman, Secretary to Chief Minister Dr Tauqir Shah, and PSO to CM Naveed Akhtar Sherazi about the arrival of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri. He said these reports expose the planning about Model Town massacre.

Jawad Hamid further said the government manipulated police by appointing their blue-eyed and handpicked IG and the prosecution as well to influence the progress on the case. On the same day of June 17, Ihtasham Qadir Khan was appointed as Prosecutor General Punjab and was given an attractive package of pay, perks and privileges that was never offered to earlier officeholders. Nor was it given to those who succeeded him. It was a unique notification of its nature which was issued at the behest of the then CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif. He said the only purpose of this appointment was to tinker with the case and lead it to a conclusion of one’s choice.

Jawad Hamid told in the statement that the Special Branch issued another report on June 16, one day ahead of the Model Town operation that a meeting took place between Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri and PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in London in which the decision to form an anti-government alliance was taken. He said as a result of the reports of the Special Branch, the Sharif brothers and their accomplices held various meetings. He said the tragedy was perpetrated as a result of careful planning.

Makhdoom Majeed Hussain Hashmi, the head of the PAT legal team, Sahibzada Anwar Akhtar Advocate, Naeem-ud-Din Ch Advocate, and Sardar Ghazanfar Hussain Advocate were also present during the hearing.
